In simple words, literacy means the ability to read and write.

The world has set aside the 8th of September every year as International Literacy Day. On this day, we remind ourselves of the need to read, the importance of indulging in the literature that would broaden our spectrum on the information.

This day was declared by UNESCO on 26 October 1966 at the 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference. It was celebrated for the first time in 1967.

It is celebrated by United Nations member states.
