The highlife maestro, Iron Boy, Abrantie are the many aka’s of Dan Amakye Dede (Dan certainly lost on me).
The 63 years old highlife singer has made his exceptional mark in music, the highlife genre to say the least.
The Akwadaawesoa crooner hails from Asanti Akyem Agogo in the Ashanti Region where he lived as a child and had his basic education.
Amakye cannot brag of achieving greater feats education wise but he certainly has gone beyond his career, clocking successes.
He started his career in 1973 with the Kumapim Royals where he played a key role as a composer and a vocalist.
The band was one which was led by Akwasi Ampofo Adjei. To further pursue his music career and make something of him, he sojourned to Nigeria where he released his first ever hit song titled Jealousy go shame.
He came back fuelled by a drive that birthed his own highlife band dubbed the Apollo High Kings.
Amakye Dede thereafter became a household brand with massive dominance of the highlife scene in the 1980s and 1990s.
He used to own a popular bar in Lapaz, a suburb of Accra called the Abrantie Spot. It was an eatery and a bar where highlife was celebrated.
News is that, he sold it and moved back home to Agogo where he is a sub-chief to establish a lucrative bar, serving the same purpose as the Abrantie spot.
He has kept his love life and family away from the prying eyes of the media. He has been married to Mary Amakye Dede, known amongst her peers as Adjoa Mary for over 3 decades.
Amakye Dede has over 20 albums to his credit with songs like Akwadaawesoa, Su fr3 wu Nyame, Bebrebee yi, Kose Kose, Okyina s3s33, Iron Boy, Handkerchief, Makoma r3tw3n as some of his popular numbers.
Dede has been a recipient of many prestigious awards from the MOGOs to being honoured the keys to Worcester.
His list is endless.
His stage craft is electrifying; he leaves presence, something to hold on to and gets you engaged as much as possible but trusts me when I say he could not dance to save his life.
If there is one move we can immediately attribute to him, it is definitely bending his back a bit, opening his arms wide and making movements as if he is about to fall, that is what we most love about him.
His songs still gives us the feels; it remains current in our lives regards of how old they are with lyrics that speaks to you as if he had you in mind when he wrote them.
Today, we are celebrating Iron Boy not because it is his birthday but because he has made a tremendous impact in the music industry, he has changed the narrative and his story.
After all, he introduced Asanti Akyem Agogo to the world.
Here are 9 Timeless songs of the Iron Boy.
