After the Sarkodie, Stonebowy, Shatta Wale, Efya, Becca badge of musicians, Ghana had the Medikal, Teephlow, Pappy Kojo, Sista Afia, Eno Barony crop of artists, then came the Tulenkey, Quamina Mp, Kofi Mole, Strongman, Bosom, Kweku Smoke, Freda Rhymz and co. Then in less than 40 years, Ghana saw a Kofi Jamar, Yaw Tog, Malcolm Nuna, a Gyakie and co.
However it seems a new breed of musicians are being ejected into the system, and that’s the “SlayQueen” crop of artists. It begun with Akuapem Poloo who had a solid brand like Tic helping her launch her music career, then on the back of Rapper Medikal, we saw Fella Makafui drop Over and another song. Just when we thought that ‘pandemic’ was over Mona 4Reall in a big launch and her connections with Shatta Wale dropped Badder than. Most of the top Female musicians were quick to push it because they were either supporting a sister or a friend. We woke up and Moesha Boudong has made a remake of Beyonce’s Diva and with her powerful media and Musician friends posted her as the newest thing to hit the music space.
Creativity is diverse, one can not tell what will be the next trend of music or where one may shine but it also does not prevent others from worrying.
Some few years back the Ghanaian movie space was equally penetrated and invaded by social media influencers and slay Queens with powerful movie friends and numbers. While a cameo got the movies the necessary attention and eye balls placing these people constantly as lead or supporting roles in movies contributed to the low standard and the inevitable collapse of the industry, poor actresses who had their lives’ work overtaken and destroyed.
Now to music, for sometime now, these slay Queen musicians have noticed that most new school and some oldies would rather play on their curvatious bodies for hit songs and streams than actually pay attention to the music,(haijia Bintu by Shatta Wale) hence these ladies who were vixens decide to do the music in hopes that putting that same body on display with some lines on it would get the same views and it works!
In the last three years I’ve followed music, I’ve never seen Kwaw Kese make video singing to any of our young artists who actually need the support, but he did a video with Mona 4Reall Fine Girl and shared on his social media.
Now here it gets scary! If a promoted also decides to follow numbers, money and audience, a time will come, the headliner artists will be Moesha, Mona 4Real because they will entertain these thirsty boys equal with just a walk on the stage and that will mean I musician doesn’t get the slot.
Not to discourage our female vixen from exploring their talents and creativity but the question is: to what end?
